Adding Website Content: What Do You Need to Know?

adding-content-to-websiteLet’s imagine you have successfully performed on-site and off-site SEO audits for your precious online asset and fixed all found issues.

Now it is the time to fill it with unique and attractive content: texts, multimedia files, etc. In this article I share the best practices of how to do it in compliance with the Google Webmaster Guidelines and bring ultimate benefit for your website:

Text

Every landing page should have at least 300 words of unique content that is written by a professional copywriter or a niche representative. The text should have the right keyword density – 5-7%. At the same time, the content should have H1-H3 tags, which are used wisely and do not set your teeth on edge. Also, if you add content via Source mode, make sure that the HTML code is correct and has all closing tags, etc. For this, use various HTML validators to confirm it.

Multimedia Files

The only correct and related multimedia files should be added to the page. Always make sure that the file is of a correct size, does not affect the page’s loading speed and the style CSS. Some multimedia, for example, images require special tag – alt attribute (alt="nice-image") – the name of the image that is recognized by crawlers or seen by visitors who have disabled the images view mode due to slow 3G connection or any other reason. Do not forget to show the original source of your multimedia files if they were taken from any other sources or were created by unknown authors.

Nofollow&Dofollow Links

Very often you are referring to or suggesting some other useful resources in your texts, obviously you will add their URLs. However, by doing it you may dilute the SEO power of your page and the site in general. In such cases I would recommend adding   rel="nofollow" tag to all outgoing links, of course, there may be some exceptions.

Internal Cross Linking

Create veins and arteries for your site, pass on “links juice” between the website inner pages. Such scheme will pass all available SEO power to all pages, which is the most useful solution when you promote only a limited amount of keywords and/or pages. The internal cross linking should be performed using the correct and related pieces of text (anchors) only. Do not confuse robots and your visitors! They may take an offense!  (just joking!).

Expose New Content

First of all, update the site map (both .xml and .html) files and re-submit changes to Google Webmaster Tool – let search engines know about new content on your site. The second most effective way of exposing any website updates is Social Media sites: share it with your customers, colleagues and friends. Let them talk about your update and share it to their circles.

In conclusion, the right and correctly added content will attract new visitors and retain the loyal ones.
