SEO Audit: Most Common On-Site Issues and How to Avoid Them

on-site-seo-auditContinuing my series of SEO Audits, at this time, I have decided to look at the most common On-Site problems that have a crucial impact on overall website online presence, while mainly do not require advance technical knowledge in order to be fixed.

Problem #1. Website’s Content

All the world’s recognised SEO specialists are constantly repeating – “Content is a KING” and I fully agree with them. However, most of website owners disregard this most important part of their online assets, using non-unique content or elements that cannot be indexed by search engines (e.g. IFrames, Flash technologies, etc.) All of the above negatively affect the website online presence from failing to get indexed to various sanctions, penalizations, and filters.

How to avoid:

  • Unique and useful content only (Google Webmaster Guidelines Commandment #1)
  • Ideally 300+ words per page
  • Professionally and logically written texts by native-speakers only
  • No Google-translated texts
  • Indexable elements: text, images, videos, etc
Extra tips for our most valuable readers: If you are running a web site with products that are having any tech specifications that could not be uniquely rewritten, you may display these specifications as images.

Problem #2. Not SEO’ed or missing Meta Tags

The Meta Tags are elements that represent websites pages in search engines result pages and have a tremendous impact on rankings.  From my experience 4 out of 5 sites don’t have them at all, or t have not unique meta tags (repeating on every single page) or these meta tags are not SEO’ed  (do not comply with Google Webmaster Guidelines).

My advice is to STOP missing this most valuable opportunity representing pages in SERP in the most clickable appearance and “manipulating” rankings in a white-hat way.

How to Avoid:

The best practice according to Google Webmaster Guidelines and Imcredo SEO Department Specialists:

Meta Tag Title:
Brand Name – Category Name – Page name

  • Maximum 70 characters
  • Upper case letters are a must
  • Spaces are a must
  • Capital letters are a must

Meta Tag Description:
A descriptive text

  • Maximum 156 characters
  • No dots in last sentences (!  and ? are allowed)

Meta Tag Keywords:
keyword1, keyword2, keyword3

  • Lower case letters are a must
  • Spaces are a must



Problem #3. Incorrect 404 Pages

While trying to access a web page that does not exist, the web server returns to a 404 Error page (if it is correctly set up on the server end). However, more frequently, it is a blank page with no informing/explanation text and navigation, which may confuse potential customers and force them to leave the site straight away. This causes a higher bounce rate and a lower conversion rate.

How to Avoid:

The 404 page should be customized to the website appearance and contain links to main pages and website sections.

In conclusion, following some or all of the above tips should improve your websites online presence at any of its lifetime stage. Thus, do not wait and start applying it now!
